Local Activities for Kids

local activities for kids

There are so many great activities for families in Kitchener-Waterloo. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, babysitter, friend…or a kid yourself, here are some ideas to get you started.

  1. Look outside. Our community is a beautiful playground. Skiing, swimming, going to the park, playing catch, riding bikes, camping, water sliding, flying kites, skating, building a snowman and so much more. No matter the season, you can step outside and have a great time with the kids.
  2. The best activities for kids are the ones where you can really connect with each other and spend quality time together. The Waterloo Region Museum or The Museum in downtown Kitchener are great examples. They always have fun exhibits. Recently there was a great dinosaur exhibit that the kids loved!
  3. Kawanis Park is a great place to take the kids or grandkids. It has a reasonable entrance fee which gets you an all-day pass. Swimming (shallow enough for the little ones and deep enough for the bigger kids), playground, grassy play spaces, and access to great walking trails for exploring. There’s a snack bar, or you can pack a cooler for the day. It’s a great family place.
  4. Local frozen yogurt spots are a favourite of lots of kids we know. They get the chance to make their own fun yogurt creations with multiple flavours and lots of toppings.
  5. Everyone loves going to the movies. Heading to one of the many theatres offers lots of movie selection. Plus in the Summer there are community outdoor screenings in the park which makes for a memorable movie-going experience.
  6. Waterloo Park splash pad is a great way to stay cool in the hot Summer months.
  7. We’re lucky to live in a community that has so many trails and great outdoor spaces. Going for a family hike on the trails is a fun way to get exercise and explore new areas.
  8. In the Winter, skating is a great activity. Local community centres offer public skating and when the weather is right, Victoria Park is the perfect outdoor skating rink.
  9. Swimming at any of the local community centres or pools is a family favourite. It’s fun plus everyone gets some exercise. Win-win.
  10. Visiting Waterloo.ca or Kitchener.ca is a good place to look for more ideas. Both cities update their websites with local events and ideas all the time.
  11. Another resource you can use is our community calendar. We update it every month with fun family-friendly local events.
