Let’s talk about the great outdoors in K-W! In any season, there are many places to explore with the family. That’s one of the great things about this wonderful community of ours. We sat down and made a list of our absolute favourite outdoor activities in K-W. Take a look!
Hiking
From day trips, to beginning trails, hiking is something everyone in the Region can enjoy. There are plenty of trails to choose from, and always something new to discover. Hiking is a great outdoor activity for any family, because it’s the perfect way to spend some quality time together and to get out for some fresh air and exercise. If you haven’t explored the trail system, here are some maps and resources to get you started.
“The Region of Waterloo owns 17 woodland properties. They are home to a wide variety of wildlife, including regionally significant species of plants, birds, amphibians and reptiles. These areas are great places to walk, watch birds and other wildlife, cross-country ski and mountain bike.
The Regional Forests open to the public all have walking trails.” — Region of Waterloo
Skiing
In Waterloo Region, we’re fortunate to be home to Chicopee — perfect for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, (and mountain biking in the warmer months). Skiing in the perfect combination of nature and exercise and a great Winter activity. What many people may not know is that Chicopee is a not-for-profit organization.
In the Winter, it’s so convenient to pack the family in the car and head out for a day of snow, sun and fresh air. What we love most about skiing is that it’s something the whole family can do together; rushing down the powdering slopes, and catching up on the chair lift. Discover more about Chicopee here.
Golfing
For anyone who is looking for a more calming outdoor activity (or frustrating, if you’re an avid golfer), explore the golf courses in the Region has to offer. We love the smell of the fresh cut greens in the early mornings as the sun is peaking up, playing a quick round in the twilight hours when the air starts to cool down. It’s a great activity if you’re looking to spend some quality time with a few people, or to get out by yourself and enjoy your surroundings.
Some of our personal favourite courses are Dundee, Rebel Creek and Conestoga.
St. Jacob’s Farmers’ Market
At the market, you may be venturing in and out of the buildings, but you can shop for delicious produce outdoors and be inspired by local vendors. We absolutely love exploring what all the vendors have to offer. Each time we visit, it’s a little bit different, but it’s always fun.
